Who Are the Red Hat Society?
The Red Hat Society has over 1.5 million members worldwide.
Their origins are remarkably simple. In 1997 Sue Ellen Cooper gave a friend a copy of that wonderful poem Warning, by British author, Jenny Joseph.
The First Red Hat Tea Party
In 1998 Sue Ellen Cooper and five friends met for afternoon tea, in Fullerton, California. In the seize the day sprit of Jenny Joseph’s poem, Warning, they all dressed in red hats and purple dresses. And so the Red Hat Society was born.
It soon spread across the U.S. and then across the world.
Red Hats Around the World
The Red Hat Society has groups (both official and unofficial) in over 35 countries including the U.S., Australia, Europe, Canada, China, Mexico and Brazil. Even Yoder’s Department store in the heart of Amish country, stocks red hat society accessories such as feather boas, for the local Red Hat Society chapter in Shipshewana.
Popularity of the Red Hat Society
From a humble tea party the Red Hat Society is now a multi million dollar world wide business. There’s a Red Hat Society Musical, books, magazine, licensed products and of course, apparel - including hats. It has even been featured on an episode of the Simpsons, Last of the Red Hot Mamas.
Red Hat Society On Tour
Tour organisers have also been quick to recognise the happy partnership of fun and commerce. When you least expect it you may find a group of women dressed in red hats and purple dresses lining up with you at your tourist destination or cruise. In fact, they sometimes book out the whole cruise liner and have a Red Hat Society cruise all to themselves.
