Tea Party For Two - Story In a Nutshell
Amy receives an invitation in the mail. Her friend Kim has invited her to a tea party for two. They lay out the tea party picnic, and go inside to get Kim’s tea party set.Meanwhile, Kim’s brother Walter and his dog Hungry Jack spy the picnic.
They eat what they think are the leftovers, as a special treat for Hungry Jack’s birthday.Eventually, the girls see the funny side. Luckily there is still enough food in the picnic basket for Amy and Kim to go ahead with their tea party for two.
Features
This book is an early reader – a transition between a picture book and a chapter book. It is presented in a fiction style format with chapter headings, but with larger pages, and large size 17 font.
The book is attractively presented with color illustrations throughout, including some double page spreads. Tea Party for Two would appeal to young girls between approximately 5 and 8 years old.
From the Book
Below is the entire text on page 17 to give you an idea of the level. The actual book font is size 17 Baskerville.
Kim and Amy unpacked their tea party picnic.
They put the crunchy peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches on the cloth.
Kim’s had crusts.
Amy’s did not.
Next came a teapot of lemonade.
Amy reached into the basket.
“I can’t wait to try these juicy green grapes,” she said.
“No little seeds inside,” said Kim.
Verdict
There are surprisingly few picture books or readers about tea parties, so Tea Party for Two fills a gap.
It has enough surprises and humor to move the story along. Children will enjoy Walter’s and Harry’s part in the story, as well as the girls’ preparations for the tea party picnic. While you can read this to a child, early readers will enjoy reading this book themselves.
Activities for Children
While not a craft or activity book, Tea Party for Two does spark some ideas for tea party activities. Here are a few children’s party activities which spring to mind.
- Make invitations modelled on the one in the book, or design your own.
- Make pink strawberry cupcakes like the ones Amy brought to the tea party.
- Amy and Kim filled the teapot with lemonade instead of tea. What else could you use?
- Cover any stains on your picnic cloth with flowers or paper cut outs.
- Decorate some plain napkins to suit your tea party theme.
