It’s a little hard to keep calm in the middle of a hot flash, it’s not just the feeling of intense heat but the further stresses of rapid heartbeat, giddiness, nausea and anxiety.

Hot flashes are the biggest complaint of menopausal women, and the products available on the shelves of supermarkets and health food stores seem to be multiplying by the week.

But our grandmothers had no access to hormone replacement pills or estrogen creams, they reached for a cooling, calming, refreshing cup of herbal tea. And that’s always a good idea.

Herbs That Help With Menopause and Hot Flashes

There are herbs suggested for helping to relieve hot flashes, such as Motherwort which, like Passionflower, Chamomile, and Valerian, assists in relieving anxiety.
Cleansing herbs like Dandelion and Alfalfa are also suggested because they support the liver, which is busy trying to move excess hormones out of the body, and there is my grandmother’s favourite, Lemon Balm.

Lemon Balm

Like most herbs Lemon Balm is antibacterial and anti viral in nature, lemon balm for herbal tea with a slightly sedative effect, lowering fever and relaxing spasms. It’s been used for centuries to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and to reduce flatulence and colic. It also eases the palpitations and feelings of suffocation that accompany the dreaded hot flash. Anything which helps to relieve menopausal stress is good news.

How to Make a Mug of Lemon Balm Tea

Pluck a handful of young leaves, tear them to release the essential oils, pour a cup of boiling water over and let it stand for 5 minutes. Strain it, add some honey, and perhaps a squeeze of lemon juice. Now sit down, kick off your shoes, sip your soothing tea and relax.
