I Sent A Letter To My Love - Children’s Tea Party Game

I Sent a Letter To My Love makes for an easy tea party game which you can easily vary to suit any theme.

I Sent A Letter To My Love
I sent a letter to my love
And on the way I dropped itletters.gif
One of you has picked it up
And put it in their pocket
Is it you? Is it you?

The group continues calling “Is it you? until the child with the handkerchief drops it behind someone, and calls out “It is YOU.”

I Sent A Letter To My Love Game
Children sit in a circle facing the middle. One child walks around the outside of the circle while the others chant the poem. Everyone chants “Is it you? Is it you?…..” until the child chooses who she will drop the handkerchief behind.

That child grabs the handkerchief and chases the first child around the circle. The first child races to sit in the space vacated by the seated person without being caught. If they succeed, the children swap places. The child with the handkerchief walks around the outside of the circle.

Variations
Substitute words for Line 3, to suit the tea party theme
e.g.

  • a pretty princess picked it up
  • a little fairy picked it up etc.

For an animal theme
Instead of “One of you has picked it up” substitute animals e.g

  • A little puppy picked it up
  • A tabby kitten picked it up
  • A big grey elephant picked it up
  • A stripey giraffe picked it up

If using animals, change the verse to suit e.g.
I sent a letter to my love
And on the way I dropped it
A tabby kitten picked it up
Insert your own choice of animal
And put it in its pocket
It’s not here, It’s not here
But it’s right HERE
