It is the beautiful presentation of these individual little cakes which sets this book apart from regular cupcake recipe books.I found the title, Fairy Cakes, a bit misleading, as I assumed this was a book of children’s cupcakes.
In fact, it covers 40 recipes for kids, family, afternoon tea and special occasion celebrations cupcakes.This book, and the cupcakes themselves, have a special quality.
Perhaps that is where the inspiration for the title, Fairy Cakes originated. The double page spread for each recipe includes a stunning full page photo.
While they look great, the designs are actually quite simple, and easy to copy from the photos.
Children’s Themes
The pig and ladybird are cupcakes topped with prepared rolled icing fondant in the appropriate vibrant colors and shapes. Other fairy cakes or cupcakes, cover themes such as princesses, numbers, Christmas, spiders webs, bats and snakes.
Easter nests are half filled cupcakes, topped with crumbled chocolate bars and mini candy easter eggs, topped with a little yellow chicken decoration.
For Adults
Adults don’t miss out. Fairy Cakes includes treats such as an espresso cream cake, chocolate truffle cake, strawberry cream cake and a patriotic stars, spots and stripes cupcake.
My favorite is the dainty wedding cupcake, pictured below. The cupcake is
topped with white pre prepared rolled icing fondant, white sugared almonds and an easily made purple crystallised flower.
A sheer white organza ribbon is tied around the outside of the paper cup into a bow. It looks elegant and classy, and yet is so simple.I can imagine these displayed at a bridal shower tea or wedding in a 5 tier cupcake stand.
Verdict
While a range of cupcake recipes are provided, you could use the decorating ideas with your own favorite recipes.
I love this book, and use the decorations as starting points for my own ideas. With 40 cupcake recipes and designs to choose from, Fairy Cakes offers plenty of variety and inspiration.
